Preamble
Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is one of India’s oldest integrated steel plants. Established in the late 1950s with British collaboration, DSP played a pivotal role in the country’s industrialisation drive, supplying steel for railways, infrastructure, defence, and core industries. Over the decades, the plant has been recognised for its expertise in long products, especially wheels and axles, catering to the Indian Railways and global markets. Looking ahead, both DSP and the IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) are undertaking brownfield expansion. The expansion will contribute to the national target of achieving 300 MTPA of crude steel capacity by 2030-31, as outlined in the National Steel Policy 2017.
Flat & Long Products Value Chain
A value chain for a steel product encompasses the stages involved in its creation from raw material to final use.
The flat products production chain begins with the mining of iron ore, followed by processing in a Blast Furnace (BF) to produce liquid steel. With long products, the process starts with the melting of ferrous scrap in an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). Thus, the following processes take place to produce long & flat steel.
