What is Green Steel?
Green steel refers to steel produced using low-carbon and sustainable methods, significantly reducing or eliminating
reliance on fossil fuels during manufacturing. Traditional steel production uses coal-based blast furnaces, where
burning coke (derived from coal) reduces iron ore into iron, emitting large amounts of CO₂—about 1.9 to 2.3 tonnes of
CO₂ per tonne of steel. In contrast, green steel uses eco-friendly alternatives like green hydrogen (produced from
renewable energy), electricity-driven furnaces, or recycled scrap steel in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), producing much
lower emissions.
Contribution of Green Steel in World Production:
Today, the majority of global steel (~70%+) is produced using carbon-intensive methods, with green steel
representing a minor share of total output.
However, green steel capacity is expanding, supported by hydrogen-based technologies, EAF expansion, and
decarbonisation commitments, with projections suggesting up to ~20% of steel production could be low-emission by
2035.
Importance of Green Steel Production and Its Significance in India
Green steel production is increasingly important for India as the country works toward its 2070 net-zero goal and
seeks to reduce emissions from its highly carbon-intensive steel sector. By shifting to hydrogen-based technologies,
renewable energy, and low-carbon processes, India can cut its industrial emissions while securing long-term export
competitiveness, especially under global carbon regulations like the EU’s CBAM. Green steel also reduces
dependence on imported coking coal, strengthens energy security, attracts ESG-focused investments, and supports
the growing domestic demand for sustainable infrastructure. Overall, it positions India’s steel industry for cleaner
growth and global leadership in low-carbon manufacturing.
Against this backdrop and to sensitize the local manufacturing industry and German/European machine, plant
components. Systems manufacturers, VDMA India together with ISR info media will organise first International
